FIRE STATION & APPARATUS

The Skagway Fire Department is housed at the Skagway Public Safety Facility, located at 308 17th Avenue. Inside, there are offices for the executive officers, training/hose tower, conference and training rooms and large apparatus bays. The living area is fully outfitted for full time crews with kitchen, day room, gym, and bunk rooms. The SFD training grounds are located on Dyea Road and consist of a burn trailer, search and rescue building, SCBA confidence course, vehicles for extrication training, multiple training props, fire equipment storage, and a 12,000 gallon water supply.

Our current fire apparatus fleet consists of two engines, two ambulances, two tenders, one brush truck, one brush ATV, one utility ATV, one medium-duty rescue truck, one technical rescue truck, two command SUVs, one utility pickup, and multiple specialty trailers. The municipality’s marine vessel SERV-U, is kept at the Skagway small boat harbor. The Skagway Firefighter’s Association also maintain three antique fire apparatus.

Engine 23

Engine 23 is a 2002 Pierce Dash, equipped with a 2000 GPM pump with a compressed air form system (CAFS), 500 gallons of water, and 30 gallons each of Class A and Class B foam, and BLS Medical equipment. E-23 is the first-due apparatus for any fire call within the hydranted area areas.

Engine 4

Engine 4 is a 2008 Pierce Saber 4x4, equipped with a 1500 GPM pump, 1000 gallons of water, and 30 gallons of Class A foam, a set of vehicle extrication equipment, and BLS Medical equipment. E-4 is the first due for all fire calls outside of the hydranted area, motor vehicle accidents, and airport standby calls.

Medic 32

Medic 32 is a 2017 Ford F-450 with a Braun Northwest body. M-32 is fully equipped as an Advanced Life Support ambulance and carries basic firefighting gear as well. M-32 and M-30 rotate as first-out on a monthly basis.

Medic 30

Medic 30 is a 2012 Ford F-450 with a Braun Northwest body. M-30 is fully equipped as an Advanced Life Support ambulance and carries basic firefighting gear as well. M-32 and M-30 rotate as first-out on a monthly basis.

Rescue 5

Rescue 5 is a 2009 International chassis with a Pierce Encore medium duty rescue body. R-5 is equipped with tools for truck company operations, vehicle extrication equipment, additional SCBAs, and rescue equipment .

Rescue 22


Rescue 22 is a 1997 Freightliner FL60/Amtech. Formerly known as Ambulance 22, this rig was replaced by Medic 32, but saw brief service as a dedicated Covid-19 response ambulance during the pandemic. It is now outfitted as technical rescue unit with ropes, water/ice rescue gear, and other specialized rescue equipment.

TENDER 20

Tender 20 is a 1991 GMC with a Becker body. It has a 750 GPM pump and 1800 gallons of water. Tender 20 is the reserve apparatus; able to function as either an engine or a tanker if needed.

TENDER 31

Tender 31 is a 2017 International/Pierce water tender. It is equipped with a 500gpm pump and 3000 gallons of water. T-31’s primary function is to supply water on rural fire scenes, but does carry basic tools and hoselines for fire attack.

Brush 26

Brush 26 is a 2001 Ford F-550 with a Precision Fire Apparatus body. It carries 300 gallons of water and a 110gpm pump. Br-26 was previously a dual purpose apparatus serving Search & Rescue and wildland fire attack in the summer and a squad unit for initial fire attack in our rural areas up and down the mountain following the Dyea Road.


Brush 1

Brush 1 is a 2020 Polaris equipped with a brush firefighting package consisting of a 105gpm pump, 70 gallons of water, and 3 gallons of foam. It also carries additional hand tools, hose, and portable water packs for remote places that the larger apparatus cannot access.


ATV-13

ATV-13 is a Polaris Ranger 6x6. It’s primary role is quick access to patients during rural EMS responses. It can also be used to transport tools and aide in wildland responses.

Utility 29

Utility 29 is a 2008 Chevy 3500 Pickup. It’s primary duties are transporting personnel, plowing snow in the winter, hauling additional equipment to Search & Rescue or Wildland incidents.

COMMAND 1

Command 1 is a 2007 Chevy Tahoe, formerly a Skagway Police vehicle. C-1 is assigned to the fire chief as a take-home response rig and is equipped with a command console, hand tools, extinguishers, SCBA, and BLS medical equipment.

Command 2

Command 2 is a 2006 Chevy Tahoe, formerly assigned to the fire chief. Command 2 is now used for transporting personnel and equipment as needed.

Antique Apparatus

The Skagway Firefighter’s Association maintains three antique fire apparatus. Engine 2 on the left is a 1937 Ford Flathead V8 that was built in-house by the fire department when it was purchased new. Engine 5 on the right is a 1953 Willys Jeep with firefighting package made by Howe. Both apparatus are still fully functional and can be seen driving around town or parked outside on nice days during the summer tourism season.

A third apparatus, a 1945 Ford/American LaFrance pumper that was used by the U.S. Army in Skagway is not currently functional and is parked inside the fire station awaiting a restoration.
